Backyard composters now available for CK residents

In an effort to save room in area landfills, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent (CK) is encouraging residents to take care of organic waste at home.

CK is launching the Backyard Composter Program, which marks the first phase of the municipality's Organic Waste Diversion Program.

Backyard composters are available for CK residents to manage food scraps and yard waste at home. They can be purchased, for $20 each, at the following municipal service centres:

• Chatham Civic Centre

• Blenheim Municipal Office

• Dresden Municipal Office

• Ridgetown Municipal Office

• Tilbury Municipal Office

• Wallaceburg Municipal Office

The bins can be purchased in-person or over the phone for a later pickup.

According to the municipality, there is a limited supply at each location.

The second phase of the Organic Waste Diversion Program will include a standardized curbside leaf and yard waste collection program in 2027. The third phase will introduce a depot food waste digester pilot in 2028.
