Two streets near downtown Chatham will undergo lengthy closures again for road reconstruction.
The municipality said King Steet West will be closed from 2nd Street to Lacroix Street until the end of October to continue the major road reconstruction that started last year. This next phase of the project includes replacing the remaining storm, sanitary, and water infrastructure along King Street West, said municipal officials.
Officials added that First Street will also be shutdown from Wellington Street West to King Street West until October 30 to reline the watermain on that street.
For those curious as to why the entire stretch of road is closed again, the municipality said the intersection of King Street West and Lacroix Street must be closed to "safely and efficiently" support the work. That includes traffic control, construction staging, and access for crews and equipment.
"Upon completion of all underground and electrical work, the right-of-way will be fully restored. This will include construction of new curbs and sidewalks (continuing from last year), driveway approaches, and final placement of surface asphalt along the full length of King Street West from Lacroix Street to Second Street," conveyed the municipality.
Last year, the traffic signals at Lacroix Street and King Street West were replaced, as were the existing streetlights along King Street West to meet provincial standards. Then in December, base asphalt was put down to allow King Street West to reopen for the winter.
The municipality noted the project continues to progress as planned, with completion anticipated by the end of this year.
Municipal officials noted that local traffic and emergency vehicles will have access through the work zone.
