LaSalle Police receive $270K to buy drones, beef up patrols

Essex MPP Anthony Leardi calls it "taking money from criminals and putting it to work to protect law-abiding citizens."

The Ontario government is investing $270,614 over three years in the LaSalle Police Service. The money comes from the Proceeds of Crime Grant Program.

"This investment will give LaSalle Police more tools to keep our communities safe and strengthen security along the Detroit River," added Leardi.

The cash will support Project Birds Eye, an initiative providing LaSalle Police with four drones to monitor the shore of the Detroit River in LaSalle. In addition to the drones, the police service will also have more marine patrols along the river, enhancing its ability to respond to incidents and maintain a police presence on the water.

"Using proceeds of crime to protect our community is a meaningful way to ensure that those who break the law help pay for the safety of LaSalle residents," said Police Chief Michael Pearce.

The Proceeds of Crime Grant Program helps police services across Ontario reinvest funds forfeited to the Crown to address local public safety priorities, prevent crime, and strengthen law enforcement.
