12 charges laid after five-hour standoff on Saturday

Windsor Police officers have laid 12 charges against a 31-year-old man arrested after a five-hour standoff on Saturday night.

It started just before 7:30 p.m. when officers responded to a call from a home on Ypres Avenue between Meldrum Road and Central Avenue.

A woman said a man forcibly entered her home despite a court order and refused to leave. She was threatened and assaulted, but she eventually fled and got help.

Officers set up a perimeter around the home and called in negotiators and the Windsor Police Emergency Services Unit.

Over the next five hours, officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect. When that was unsuccessful, they entered the home.

Two officers were assaulted during a brief struggle with the suspect, although they didn't require medical attention.

Police haven't released the suspect's name to protect the victim's identity. He's charged with forcible entry, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, uttering death threats, threatening to damage property, two counts of assaulting a police officer with a weapon, resisting arrest, mischief, unlawfully entering a dwelling, and failure to comply with a probation order.

If you or someone you know needs support, call Victim Services Windsor Essex County at 519-723-2711 or the Victim Assistance Unit at Windsor Police at 519-255-6700 ext. 4879.
