The Sarnia Police Service (SPS) is encouraging parents and caregivers to review safety rules with their children before they go trick-or-treating on Saturday.
"Talk to them about ensuring they're looking both ways before crossing the road and staying close to their parents and caregivers," said Cst. Nick McLean. "If you're going trick-or-treating with some friends, make a note to stick together."
Trick-or-treaters without adult supervision are also encouraged to plan their route.
"Make sure your family or your friends know where you're trick-or-treating," he said. "Ensure that if kids are out trick-or-treating, they know how to get home safely and if there is an issue, they know how to contact the family or police."
As people may be wearing dark coloured costumes or clothing, McLean stressed the importance of staying visible.
"It's important to wear reflective clothing or even have a flashlight with you because you want drivers to see where you are," he said.
Parents and guardians are also asked to inspect any treats collected before children start eating it.
"It's important for parents and caregivers, when everyone comes home from trick-or-treating, when you get home, just check all the candy and snacks for any holes, any tears, or any sort of tampering. If something doesn't look right, don't eat it," McLean said.
Patrol officers will be out in the community. McLean said they'll have reflective stickers to hand out to children.
