Kids Bike Rally moves to Canatara Park

The third annual Kids Bike Rally is changing venues and will be held at Canatara Park in June.

The free event for kids between the ages of four and 12 includes safety lessons, an obstacle course, and bike decorating.

NuSarnia Community Partnerships and Events Manager Kerry Gabriel said the location change from Lambton College made sense for a couple of reasons, one of which is because of the ongoing construction of a new student residence.

"Canatara Park would bring more trails, more activities for the kids to enjoy, more time for the families to be together, so it really was a natural fit and evolution for the Kids Bike Rally," Gabriel said.

The park would also offer an opportunity for increased participation.

Over the past two years, more than 250 kids and families have participated in the event.

"Given the space at Canatara, we've got a nice loop that's laid out for the kids," Gabriel said. "We'll have interactive activity booths hosted by local organizations that are focusing on youth-centred programs, bike safety, active transportation, and environmental stability."

Similar to past years, children will have the opportunity to earn prizes.

"The kids will actually get a passport, and once they get their stickers from the safety questions, they'll be able to spin our big prize wheel, and have a chance to win a brand new bike," she said.

The first 200 kids to check-in at the event will also receive a swag bag.

The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Pre-registration is open.

"We'd love to have everyone register by June 8. That helps us with the final numbers for things that we need to do the day of the event, and make sure we have the number of volunteers that we need," Gabriel said.

This year marks the event's third year and Gabriel said they're excited about how it continues to grow.

"We're very excited to have both the BGC Sarnia-Lambton and also the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sarnia-Lambton involved as new co-hosts this year," she said. "We're just driving that impact and making sure we're promoting healthy lifestyles, confidence, community wellness, just bringing people together."

Gabriel also thanked the community presenters who have been involved in the event since the beginning, along with presenting sponsor The Sarnia Centre and major sponsor Blackwater Coffee.
