Participants needed for upcoming Polar Plunge

Sarnia-Lambton residents are being encouraged to sign up for the upcoming Polar Plunge fundraiser in support of Special Olympics Ontario.

On February 21, individuals and teams will jump into a lined bin at Lambton College as part of the chilling challenge.

"Sarnia Fire has graciously offered to come and fill it for us this year again," said Organizer and Sarnia Police Service Cst. Jocelyne Paquette.

As of February 11, about 10 teams had signed up and over $5,400 had been raised.

"We'd love to raise $25,000, that's what we've set our goal at," she said. "This is our third year doing the Polar Plunge locally and we've raised over $46,000 over the last two years."

Paquette said they have reached out to local high schools in an effort to register more teams.

People can register right up until the event date. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. and the festivities will start at 12 p.m.

Paquette said participants can keep warm in a tent with heaters while they watch other participants take the plunge.

Registration costs $40 per person. However, the registration fee will be waived for those who fundraise $50 or more (or $40 for students).

Those looking to register or donate can do so through the Polar Plunge website.

A record-breaking $1.1 million was raised across the province last year for Special Olympics Ontario.

"They're a great organization. The money goes to help kids be able to go to different sporting events and keep different programs running," said Paquette.

The local event will include a barbecue, with food and hot chocolate available to purchase, and a 50/50 draw.

Chatham-Kent's ninth annual Polar Plunge was held in January and raised $50,016.
