Volunteers needed for upcoming Special Olympics Games

The Special Olympics Ontario School Championships will open in Chatham-Kent in less than 50 days.

Five different sports will be taking place on June 11 and 12, including track and field, soccer, and floor ball in Chatham, and bocce ball, and basketball in Ridgetown.

With opening and closing ceremonies, a lot of volunteers are needed.

"Anywhere between 100 and 200 volunteers," said -Kent Police Sergeant Jason Herder. "The games themselves take place on the 11th and 12th of June, however, we'll also require volunteers on the 10th of June and on the 13th of June for setup and teardown of our opening and closing ceremonies.

Herder added that volunteers are needed for a number of different things, including manual labour with setup and takedown.

"We're looking for people who will be able to guide the amount of traffic coming in and out of opening and closing ceremonies, ensuring that the athletes get to their seats. And then the same thing for competition as well at the different game, ensuring that the athletes get to where they need to go."

Anyone who is interested in volunteering can sign up at www.schoolchamps.ca, and fill out a form with their availability.

"Our team's going to host a volunteer information night," said Herder. "There will be two dates, two weeks prior to the games starting, so everyone will understand kind of the lay of the land, and what responsibilities they'll have prior to the games taking place."

All events for the Special Olympics Ontario School Championships will be open to the public.
