Ministry seeking public comment on proposed Dresden landfill expansion

The Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks is seeking public comment on York1's proposal to expand the old Dresden landfill.

On Tuesday, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent received a notice from the ministry regarding a new post to the Environmental Registry of Ontario (ERO).

According to the post, the province is now considering making a regulation under the Environmental Assessment Act to designate the landfill and waste processing facility proposed by York1 Environmental Waste Solutions Ltd. as a project subject to a comprehensive environmental assessment.

The posting can be found at ero.ontario.ca/notice/019-8417.

“To reiterate, I would once again like to make it clear that I stand with the people of Dresden, with the people of Chatham-Kent, and with our neighbours in the County of Lambton,” Mayor Darrin Canniff said in a statement on Thursday.

The municipality is preparing its submission on the second application, regarding the proposed reopening of the closed landfill ahead of the April 11 submission deadline.

In addition, the municipality will also be commenting on the latest ERO posting.

"I encourage everyone to visit the Let’s Talk page to get their information and to send comments on the Ontario Environmental Registry website,” said Canniff.

You can find more information on the project on the Let's Talk Page.

The deadline for comments on the second proposal, regarding the landfill, will be open until April 11.

Comments for the third proposal will be open until May 10.

“I encourage everyone to submit comments to the latest ERO posting before the May 10, 2024 deadline," said Canniff.
