FreeHelpCK hosts a rock painting event to create a community 'rock snake'

In a world where divisiveness and distance often seem to dominate our lives, FreeHelpCK set out to change the narrative by embarking on a heartwarming initiative at Downtown Chatham Centre.

Encouraged by the fascinating concept of "rock snakes," Geri Ann Hughson, founder of FreeHelpCK, was inspired by the 300 colourful snakes along Sarnia's waterfront.

Hughson told CK News her goal was to create a sense of togetherness and involve the community as much as possible, as she deeply loves the city of Chatham.

Several children gathered to transform ordinary rocks into vibrant rocks to put in Kingston Park. The Rock painting event is a simple yet impactful concept, and people can add painted rocks from home to the ever-growing art trail.

"Anyone can get involved, doesn't matter your age, who you are, if you have a disability, just add it to the snake, and when you walk by it, it can bring you inspiration, bring up your day, or put a smile on your face. It's just a community coming together who inspire others," shared Hughson.

FreeHelpCK is also hosting Operation Backpack, its biggest event, ensuring no child goes without a backpack filled with all the essential supplies. Last year they helped supply nearly 700 backpacks to children in Chatham-Kent.

"This year, our goal is 1000 as times are tougher. So we have different places we can donate. Anyone, even kids in college, can receive a backpack," Hughson said.

Staples Canada, Dollartree, Giant Tiger, Enbridge, and Riverview Gaming Centre are all sponsors of Operation Backpack.
