Open house to outline Highway 21 roadwork in Southampton

Residents and business owners in Southampton are being advised that a pre-construction meeting will take place ahead of upcoming roadwork on Highway 21 between South Street and Craig Street.

The improvements are being funded through the Ontario Ministry of Transportation’s Connecting Link Program and will focus on rehabilitating the Highway 21 corridor through the community.

Work will involve new asphalt paving along Railway Street, Albert Street South and North Rankin Street, along with enhancements to sections of the local water distribution system. Crews will also carry out maintenance on existing storm cross culverts within the construction limits.

Members of the public are invited to attend a pre-construction open house at Southampton Town Hall, located at 201 High Street, on March 17 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The session will give residents an opportunity to meet representatives from the contracting company and review detailed plans for the project.

Walker Construction has been awarded the contract and expects to begin work toward the end of March, depending on weather and site conditions. Construction activities are scheduled to take place Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. A more detailed phasing and scheduling outline will be shared in a future notice once plans are finalized.

Updates on the project will continue to be posted on the Town’s Engage webpage.

During construction, Railway Street, Albert Street South and North Rankin Street are expected to stay open to traffic in stages, with single-lane closures managed by traffic control personnel. Detours could be introduced if emergency situations arise. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the duration of the work. On-street parking along Albert Street South will be limited when crews are working nearby, and visitors to the downtown area are encouraged to make use of side streets and municipal parking lots.

Short-term water service disruptions may occur north of the Zgaa-biig-ni-gan Bridge while valves are being replaced. Advance notice will be provided for any planned interruptions.

Further updates, including details about construction timing and any anticipated water shutdowns, will be issued as the project progresses. More information is available at www.engage.saugeenshores.ca/Hwy21Southampton.

Municipal officials thank residents and businesses for their understanding as these infrastructure upgrades are completed.
