Chatham doctor charged with sex crimes takes the stand

The trial of a Chatham doctor accused of sexual assault involving minors continued on Friday with the accused taking the stand in his own defence.

Dr. Robert Wismer denied allegations that he sexually assaulted his neighbour's children during a pool party at his home two years ago.

Wismer told the court he hasn't worked in two years because of the allegations and that the accusations have been very stressful, causing him to seek a psychiatrist to deal with his mental health issues.

Wismer was also cross examined by the prosecution and told the court the September 29, 2024 allegations from his neighbours came as a shock to him. But he admitted that he had been alone with the alleged victims for several hours on the day in question.

He also said the children visited his home often, but he doesn't recall what is alleged to have happened on September 29.

Dr. Wismer also denied allegations that he played a game with a neighbour's young daughter that involved her straddling his groin area and playing "horsey", and another neighbour's daughter wearing goggles she couldn't see out of while something was put in her mouth.

Wismer also denied hiding a crotchless pink bathing suit bottom alleged to have been worn by one of the children during the alleged sexual assaults and denied discarding a bed sheet with a hole cut out of it that went missing from his garage.

The trial also heard there was a discrepancy between what he told Chatham-Kent police during his initial interrogation following his arrest on October 13, 2024 and what he said in court on Friday.

He repeatedly told the court on Friday that the games never happened, but told the investigator two years ago that he could explain all the games.

Wismer added the games were innocent and anything other than that would have been inappropriate.

Written submissions will be filed next month and the trial will continue on December 4.
