CK Farmer running in upcoming election

A Thamesville farmer is trying his hand at joining the world of politics.

Mark Huston is looking to be the lone Ward 3 councillor on Chatham-Kent's (CK) next municipal council, representing communities like Thamesville and Bothwell.

He told CK News Today he decided to run in the upcoming election because he loves the municipality.

"I just want to make sure that things are better than what they were when I was growing up," explained Huston.

For Huston, the biggest issue the next council needs to address is infrastructure. More specifically, how the municipality can maintain it without continually raising taxes.

"We're blessed and cursed at the same time. We got more infrastructure than most other communities within Ontario, but, especially in Ward 3, we don't have the population to offset [costs] with property taxes," he added.

Huston had worked with several agricultural organizations over the years. This includes the Kent Federation of Agriculture and Grain Farmers of Ontario. To him, the work he did to help these organizations grow is the proof voters need showing that he's the right person for the job.

"That type of experience runs well with what council is trying to do over the next term, which is grow," said Huston.

CK's election will be on October 26, 2026.
