Over 1,800 backpacks handed out in Chatham-Kent

Hundreds of local youth headed back to school this week with a backpack full of essential school supplies thanks to FreeHelpCK's Operation Backpack.

"This year, we prepared and distributed a total of 1,804 backpacks to youths across Chatham Kent, ensuring that our young community members have the tools they need for a successful school year," said FreeHelpCK's Tim Haskell.

That's up from the 1,300 backpacks that were handed out in 2023.

FreeHelpCK provided a breakdown of the communities where backpacks were distributed.

Chatham - 924

Wallaceburg - 321

Ridgetown - 302

Tilbury area - 257

Smaller towns, including Bothwell, Wheatley, Merlin, Charlevoix, and Blenheim were also included. Plus, an additional six backpacks filled with supplies were donated directly to local schools to help students in need.

The organization said it wouldn't have been possible without the generous support of the community.

"Your generosity and support have made a lasting impact on the lives of so many young people," said  Haskell. "Thank you for being a part of this wonderful initiative and for giving each youth a great start to their school year! Let's continue to lift each other up and make a difference in our community!"

FreeHelpCK also thanked the numerous local businesses that help fundraise the money and supplies needed to make Operation Backpack a success.
