OPP traffic stop leads to charges

A 27-year-old Wallaceburg man has been charged with several offences by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Chatham-Kent following a traffic stop early Monday morning.

The OPP said an officer received a licence plate status notification on the police Automated Licence Plate Recognition (ALPR) system while approaching a stationary vehicle on Main Street near Erie Street at around 2:40 a.m. and the driver gave police a false identity.

"The investigating officer determined that the driver was violating conditions of a previous release order and was in possession of a prohibited weapon," said Constable Brett Phair.

The suspect was charged with impersonation with intent to avoid arrest, prosecution or obstruction of justice, possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to his prohibition order, obstructing a peace officer, unauthorized possession of a weapon, and two counts of failure to comply with his release order other than to attend court.
