Recognized For His Volunteer Efforts

Wallaceburg native Don Wells has received the Sovereign's Medal for Volunteers from the governor general of Canada.

He received the medal by mail last week, along with a letter from the Governor General David Johnson, congratulating him.

Wells says the recognition stems from his many years as a volunteer, in working with Don's Journey of Hope.

"I feel very honoured but I'd really like to give this to the people that were there to help me when I needed help years ago," says Well.

Adding, he had no idea he was even up for the award.

"I was really shocked by it," says Wells.

His most recent donation was a $16,000 cheque to the Children's Health Foundation.

Wells says the volunteer work he does is not for the purpose of receiving awards, but to help others.

"It's not about me, it's about the people we try to help," says Wells. "To try and get a cure for this nasty, awful disease called cancer."
