Inflation ticks up in Canada amid high gas prices

Canadians paid more for gas, clothing, and shoes in April as inflation ticked upwards 0.4 percentage points from March to 2.8 per cent year-over-year.

The acceleration in the Consumer Price Index is blamed on a 28.6 per cent year-over-year increase in April, or 5.9 per cent from March.

The inflation rate without the price at the pumps is 2 per cent, after March's rate of 2.2 per cent.

Overall energy prices rose 19.2 per cent from last year as uncertainty over supply, limited because of the war in the Middle East, and the switch to the summer blend.

Natural gas prices rose 2.4 per cent in April after falling 18.1 per cent in March.

Those buying clothing or shoes paid more last month. Overall, the cost rose by 2 per cent.

Rent continued to rise, last month by 3.6 per cent compared to March's increase of 4.2 per cent. The cost of rent has soared 30.8 per cent in the past five years.

For those who travelled in April, travel tours fell 11 per cent after rising 11.5 per cent in March. Typically, the cost of tours declines in April.

In Ontario, inflation grew 2.4 per cent from a year ago.

Statistics Canada will release its Consumer Price Index report for May on June 22.
