CK Fire and Rescue extinguish Pine Street blaze

A mattress fire has prompted Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue to remind residents that smoking materials continue to be the leading cause of fatal fires.

On Wednesday morning, Station 1 and 2 fire crews responded to Pine Street following reports of smoke.

At the scene, firefighters found a mattress on fire in one of the homes.

“Please avoid smoking in bed or when tired, always use deep, sturdy ashtrays, make sure cigarette butts are fully extinguished in water or sand, and keep all smoking materials away from bedding, furniture, and anything that can burn,” Public Information Officer Whitney Burk said.

Burk adds that small steps like those can help prevent dangerous fires.

The blaze was quickly extinguished, and no injuries were reported.
