Windsor-Essex celebrates waste diversion milestone

Since the Green Bin Program was launched in October, over 5,000 tonnes of food waste have been diverted from the landfill.

The municipalities of Essex, Lakeshore, LaSalle, Tecumseh, and Windsor started the program in fall 2025 after the bins were provided to all households.

“Diverting 5,000 tonnes of food waste from our local landfill is a remarkable achievement,” said Cathy Copot-Nepszy, Manager of Waste Diversion. “That's thousands of households making a real difference every collection day. We’re giving all residents a well-deserved High 5 for this milestone.”

Phase 2 of the program will be rolled out in the fall of 2026. Residents in Amherstburg, Kingsville, and Leamington should receive their bins in September or October, with collection beginning in November.
