An early autumn tradition in the City of Windsor will unfold in a new area.
Mayor Drew Dilkens announced on Tuesday that Open Streets Windsor, a celebration of active urban living, will move to a new section of the city this year.
On Sunday, September 22, the new Open Streets East End edition will cover an eight-kilometre stretch between Howard Avenue and St. Rose Avenue.
"Open Streets promotes walking, biking, and other forms of active transportation, while fostering eco-friendly practices and highlighting local businesses in our community," said Dilkens. "It’s a day to come together, explore, and celebrate the vibrant and diverse spirit of Windsor."
The new route will begin on Howard and Erie Street and work through the Lanspeary Park area to Ottawa Street. It will proceed along Walker Road and Drouillard Road to Ford City, before going down Wyandotte Street and ending at Miracle Riverside Park.
There will be seven community "hubs" with the new route, including Via Italia, Lanspeary Park, Ottawa Street, Ford City, the Power Hub, Pillette Village, Olde Riverside, and Miracle Park.
Previously, Open Streets Windsor had stretched from the University of Windsor, and through the downtown core before ending in Olde Walkerville.
The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with streets closed between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. During that time, people can walk, bicycle, jog, and enjoy the openness of the event.
