Improvements coming after west Windsor mail service is suspended

A local Member of Parliament has reported that the national mail service will address a pause in delivery to a Windsor neighbourhood.

"I have lodged an official complaint against Canada Post as they have paused direct mail service to businesses and single-dwelling residents in Sandwich due to ongoing construction," said Windsor West MP Brian Masse in a Facebook post.

A letter was sent on Tuesday to Canada Post asking why mail delivery was suspended in Olde Sandwich Towne. Masse also wanted to know why residents and business owners weren't notified immediately.

"I have also been made aware that this suspension, which began approximately 1.5 weeks ago, was only communicated to residents at the end of last week," wrote Masse.

Masse reported on Facebook Thursday that Canada Post has responded to his concerns.

"More information to come but Canada Post got back to me and new arrangements will be made for next week, and there will be better communication and plans for the future," Masse posted on Facebook. "I’m still hoping they agree to my request to do something special this week, but no commitment as yet."

Responding to a request for comment by WindsorNewsToday.ca, Canada Post said the suspension was made to protect its employees working in the area.

"The health and safety of our employees is our top priority," said Canada Post spokesperson Lisa Liu in an email. "Due to health and safety concerns, we recently suspended delivery to addresses affected by ongoing construction on Sandwich Street in Windsor. Letters informing affected customers of the change were delivered to addresses that were accessible."

In response to Masse's concerns about accessibility to the mail depot on Walker Road, Liu added that the depot is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

"The local operations team is working on installing temporary community mailboxes to resume delivery to all affected addresses until the construction project is finished," said Liu. "We will be in touch with residents with more information once they are installed...We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and thank people for their patience until we resume regular delivery."
