Crimes against people climbs in June in Windsor and Amherstburg

Windsor Police say property crimes dropped in June from one year ago, but not crimes against people. Those climbed 26.6 per cent.

Police released their crime statistics for June on Wednesday, which are compiled using the Canadian Centre for Justice and Community Safety Standards. The criteria only measure the most serious offences. Motor vehicle collisions are excluded.

An increase in assaults drove the increase in crimes against people. Those were up 42 per cent in the city and Amherstburg.

Thefts within the Windsor Police Service jurisdiction fell 11.2 per cent.

The only outlier for property crime was arson. While Amherstburg recorded none, there have been 14 in Windsor this year, compared to seven by this point in 2023. Four fires were intentionally set last month.

By the numbers, Ward One residents in Windsor enjoy the lowest crime in the city.

There were just 12 crimes against people, which include a wide range of offences from threats to homicide, compared to eight last year, marking a 50 per cent increase.

Police recorded 17 property crimes in Ward One, a drop of 43.3 per cent from last year when there were 30.

Ward Three, which includes downtown Windsor, had the most property crimes and offences against residents.

While crimes against people climbed 55.9 per cent from this time last year, property offences fell 10.38 per cent, propelled by a 24 per cent drop in break-and-enters, while thefts fell 12.93 per cent.

Assault accounted for most of the 92 crimes against people. Police investigated 58 occurrences so far this year, compared to 38 by this time last year.

Other notable statistics include a 24.1 per cent drop in mischief investigations in Ward Four, thefts fell 50 per cent in Ward Six, and the number of fraud occurrences in Ward Seven was down 45.4 per cent.

In Windsor, Ward Nine bucked the trend across the city as crimes against people tumbled 57.14 per cent and property crime offences dipped 12.3 per cent.
