Bird enthusiasts from around the globe will flock to Leamington and the Hillman Marsh Conservation Area soon to meet the thousands of shorebirds that arrive each spring.
In anticipation, several hikes and activities are planned between May 1 and May 21. All are included in the price of admission to Hillman Marsh Conservation Area, although some require pre-registration.
The first event is on Sunday, May 5. Joseph Pitawanakwat will host an interactive presentation about bird names in Anishinaabemowin.
On Wednesday, May 8 and Sunday, May 11, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., renowned shorebird expert Jean Iron will host a hike to identify the many shorebirds in the area.
Thursday, May 9, and Thursday, May 16, is the birding for beginners hike with Essex Region Conservation Authority Environmental Educator Jess Rose.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., volunteers from the Ontario Field Ornithologists will help guests identify shorebirds from the Shorebird Viewing Blind.
"Combined with Point Pelee National Park's Festival of Birds, the birding opportunities in the Pelee/Hillman region during spring migration are unparalleled," said ERCA Director of Communications and Outreach Services, Danielle Breault Steubing. "Visitors travel here from around the world.
Entrance fees to the conservation area are $10 per vehicle, but special spring birding passes are available.
