The Town of Tecumseh has demonstrated its readiness for electric vehicles (EVs).
The municipality rolled out this week the first three of a set of EV charging stations. The first three are at Tecumseh Town Hall, Lakewood Park, and McAuliffe Park.
Mayor Gary McNamara said the installation of the chargers provides more opportunities for EV drivers to keep their vehicles running.
"As more electric vehicles continue to pop up, we want to ensure both residents and visitors have a place to charge their EVs," said McNamara. "We hope this is just the beginning of bringing sustainable options to Tecumseh."
The charging stations were installed by Essex Powerlines. Each consists of level-two charging ports, which are available for a quick top-up. An EV takes anywhere from six to 14 hours to fully charge, and the stations are compatible with any EV.
"Increasing the accessibility of chargers is crucial in strengthening the adoption of EVs and reducing GHG emissions within the transportation sector," said Essex Energy Corporation Project Coordinator Eric Freeze. "We’re proud to be paving the path towards a net-zero future."
Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program provided Essex Powerlines with the funding to install the charging stations. An app is available to give EV users guidance on where to find chargers while out in the community.
