The elevated water levels along Lake Erie and strong winds in the forecast are raising concerns of possible flooding.
The Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) issued a flood watch on Friday for the Lake Erie shoreline from Windsor to Belle River, along with Pelee Island, and the Detroit River shoreline.
The conservation authority said high winds peaking between 30-40 kilometres per hour are expected overnight into Saturday and possibly into Sunday. Those conditions along with elevated lake levels could result in possible flooding.
ERCA said the Lake Erie shoreline between Wheatley Harbour and Point Pelee National Park in the Municipality of Leamington is an area of particular concern.
"People should take extra caution to avoid areas where flooding is occurring as well as rivers, streams, and shoreline areas during significant rainfall and wind/lake events," ERCA said. "The combination of slippery banks, waves, waves overtopping shoreline structures, and fast-moving water can be dangerous."
The flood watch will remain in effect until 6 p.m. on Monday.
