Windsor seeking input on short-term rental regulations

The City of Windsor is considering regulations and licensing for short-term rentals.

Licensing staff are currently collecting information from municipalities across the country on how short term rentals are regulated.

"Primarily we want to license for consumer protection, health and safety and prevent public nuisance. So generally when we look at those types of thresholds we look and see if there's any issues that we may need to put regulations in place," said Supervisor of Licensing Craig Robertson.

City staff are also collecting information from members of the public who may have concerns about short-term rentals in the community. To have your say you can fill out a survey on the City of Windsor website. The survey will be available until March 7, 2020, at 4 p.m.

"We want to make sure we have the public's input, what they have to say, maybe what they'd like to see the city do and what those regulations may look like," said Robertson.

Resident Jim St. Louis said he's been hosting people through Airbnb for over a year now and has a lot of success.

"If they have some kind of licensing, I encourage it to a point. I don't agree that the government should necessarily be involved in private business but if it's something that has to do with safety of people, I'm all for it," said St. Louis.

Other residents have concerns about too many short-term rental properties using affordable rental properties in the city.

A report outlining regulation and licensing options for the City of Windsor is expected to go to council in the fall.
