Trustees Considering Closing Kennedy Collegiate Pool

Trustees with the public school board are going to look at the pros and cons of closing the pool at Kennedy Collegiate secondary school in Windsor.

Trustee Alan Halberstadt says the pool is going unused and wants to see the costs associated with keeping the pool open versus filling it in.

“The ideal thing would be to close the pool, unfortunately,” says Halberstadt. “It’s served a great purpose over the years, but times change.”

The pool doesn’t have the popularity it once did according to Halberstadt.

“There’s a new demographic [at Kennedy Collegiate], Forster students have moved in there, there’s a significant new Canadian population there,” says Halberstadt. “Swimming is not popular with the current community.”

Halberstadt says the pool costs the Greater Essex County District School Board about $60,000 a year to operate, and another $140,000 in repairs will be needed in short order.

Administration is set to bring back a report to trustees before a decision of the pool’s future is made.
