Sting goalie captures OHL rookie of the week honour

Sarnia Sting goaltender Kale Osipenko has been named the Ontario Hockey League's rookie of the week.

The freshman netminder made 42 stops as the Sting beat Oshawa 5-3 on Friday.

He followed that up with a 24 save performance in Saturday's 2-1 overtime victory in Brampton.

The 17-year-old from Renfrew, ON has a 4-3 record with a 2.77 goals-against average and .910 save percentage through seven games since being called-up from his hometown Wolves of the CCHL.

The former seventh round (126th overall) pick by the Sting in 2024 is 11-5-1 with a 2.41 goals-against average and .930 save percentage in 18 games with Renfew this season.

He represented Canada East at the World Junior A Challenge earlier this season, posting a 2.39 goals-against average and .931 save percentage through four outings.

The Sting's next game is on Thursday in Windsor, before they return home to host Saginaw on Friday and the Soo on Family Day Monday.

They're currently sitting in ninth in the Western Conference, five points behind the Spirit for the eighth and final playoff spot.
