Lambton County’s medical officer of health, Dr. Karalyn Dueck, has issued a cold weather alert as temperatures are expected to plunge over the next few days.
The temperature is expected to meet the threshold of -15 C overnight Thursday, with wind chill values around -25 C.
Environment Canada said the coldest air of the season, along with very cold wind chills are expected this weekend with the potential for significant snow on Sunday.
Friday's forecast calls for a daytime high of -14 C and a low of -24 C, while Saturday's high is expected to be -13 C with a low of -17 C.
The cold weather alert is expected to remain in effect until Sunday.
Lambton Public Health (LPH) is advising residents to dress in layers, shield exposed areas from the wind, and limit time spent outdoors.
Local agencies that provide shelter and assistance to those experiencing homelessness are being advised to prepare for an increase in demand.
Those experiencing homelessness can contact Lambton County Social Services at 519-344-2062, Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. For assistance outside of office hours, individuals are asked to contact the Good Shepherd’s Lodge at 519-344-1679.
LPH said overexposure to cold can be hazardous and even life-threatening. Symptoms of hypothermia include pale skin, lethargy, confusion, excessive shivering, and hallucinations.
