New Enbridge Gas pipeline proposed in east Lambton

Enbridge Gas wants to construct a renewable natural gas (RNG) pipeline in Brooke-Alvinston and Warwick Township.

The utility has applied to the Ontario Energy Board for approval to place approximately 15.3 kilometres of six-inch steel pipeline in the communities.

According to Enbridge, Waste Management (WM) is planning to build and operate a new facility which would convert landfill gas into RNG that's suitable for injection into Enbridge's system.

If approved, the pipeline would transport RNG produced at the Twin Creeks Environmental Centre (TCEC) in Watford to the existing natural gas system in Brooke-Alvinston.

Enbridge spokesperson Andrea Stass said the project will help Ontario lower its carbon footprint, because producing energy out of waste displaces the need for conventional natural gas.

"We're expecting to start building in the spring of 2024," Stass said. "That's subject to getting approval from the Ontario Energy Board. We're anticipating it will be completed by December, 2024."

Enbridge said Waste Management would pay for the project and it would have no cost impact on ratepayers.

The Ontario Energy Board said it will hold a public hearing to consider the application.
