Lambton-Kent-Middlesex Conservative nomination period ends Sunday

The deadline for nominations to run for the Progressive Conservatives in the eventual by-election to fill the vacant provincial seat in Lambton-Kent-Middlesex is this weekend.

Anyone interested in running for the seat has until 5 p.m. Sunday, December 10 to file their nominations.

The seat was left vacant after MPP and Labour Minister Monte McNaughton resigned in September for a job in the private sector.

So far, a veteran councillor in Chatham-Kent, Steve Pinsonneault has expressed his intent to run for the vacant spot.

As of Friday morning, he was the only known candidate to be running, and a nomination meeting is scheduled early in the new year on January 27, 2024.

A provincial by-election must be called within six months of an MPP's departure if there is more than 12 months before the next provincial election.

This means a by-election must be called by the end of March.

So far, no date has been called.  The next general election is set for June 4, 2026.
