Runners and walkers invited to run with first responders

You've got a chance to run and walk alongside police officers and firefighters in September.

Organizers of FireFest 2023 are inviting people to participate in a five-kilometre race in Windsor on Saturday, September 9. The first-ever Run With Responders 5K will support FireFest 2023 and local charities.

Co-organizer David Orshinsky revealed the two charities Wednesday that will benefit.

"For 2023, our charities are Canadian Mental Health Association-Windsor-Essex County (CMHA) and Law Enforcement Torch Relay for Special Olympics Ontario, with 100 per cent of the proceeds to benefit these two important charitable organizations," said Orshinsky.

Funds raised will support ongoing mental health education, training, and awareness as part of the Sole Focus Project, an initiative of the CMHA.

"Mental health is key to our well-being, and we can’t be truly healthy without it," said Kim Willis of the CMHA Windsor-Essex County. "It involves how we feel, think, act, and interact with the world around us. Mental health is about realizing our potential, coping with the normal stresses of life, and making a contribution to our community."

The Law Enforcement Torch Relay for Special Olympics Ontario supports ongoing efforts to achieve acceptance and inclusivity for people with developmental disabilities.

Windsor Police Chief Jason Bellaire, Fire Chief Stephen Laforet, and Essex-Windsor EMS Chief Bruce Krauter were also on hand for Wednesday's announcement.

Individuals and teams wanting to participate can get the complete information on the Race Roster website. Entry fees are $50 for the 5K and $20 for the 1K or Kids' Dash.

FireFest 2023 includes the Windsor FireFit Competition, which will take place September 8, 9, and 10.
