Provincial police are reminding those planning on flocking to Pottahawk Point this Sunday for an annual booze-fueled boat party to keep safety top of mind.
Known as the "Pottahawk Pissup", the event in the waters of Lake Erie between Turkey Point and Long Point is unauthorized and takes place on the second Sunday in July. Typically hundreds of people attend.
"Every year, emergency services respond to numerous incidents involving injuries and impaired boaters," OPP said in a statement issued ahead of the event. They added that many of the incidents involve alcohol and some include people being stranded in the area.
Police warn that both uniformed and plain-clothed officers will be present at marinas and that they will be conducting random vessel checks throughout the day.
Boaters are reminded to have all necessary safety equipment on board, including life jackets or PFDs, and some form of communication, such as a radio or cell phone. The driver must also have a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) with them.
The OPP also recommend that those planning to attend tell someone their destination and when they expect to return home.
It is not advised to pick up hitchhikers who want to join the festivities.
"We want everyone who will be attending Pottahawk to behave in a safe and responsible manner and to prioritize their safety and the safety of others," said Jeff McNorgan, acting inspector of the Norfolk County OPP Detachment Commander.
