Chatham woman sentenced for violent stabbing

A Chatham woman who pleaded guilty to stabbing another woman in Chatham last year has been sentenced to 4.5 years in jail less time already served.

Brandy Redmond, 29, was sentenced in a Chatham court on Thursday afternoon after pleading guilty to the lesser charge of aggravated assault in May.

Redmond was initially charged with attempted murder in April of 2021 for stabbing a woman she knows outside of an apartment building on Riverview Drive.

Redmond has been at the Windsor Jail for 16 months and still has to serve another 2.5 years. The prosecution was asking for six to seven years in custody and the defence was asking for 4 years.

She is also is banned from owning or possessing weapons for life, must submit a DNA sample, and is not to have communication with the victim and another woman.

The court heard Redmond stabbed a woman in the neck with a serrated knife with finger holes. The victim suffered muscle and nerve damage, which caused paralysis to her mouth.

The judge also noted that Redmond has a lengthy criminal record with nine previous convictions for violent crime and previously served time in jail in 2014 for a similar crime.

In handing down the sentence, the judge deemed the force excessive and unprovoked, but also took into account that Redmond has mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and a border line personality disorder. She also had a poor upbringing and has substance abuse issues, according to the judge.

The defence said she feared for her safety at the time of the stabbing and the safety of her unborn child.

The judge said the argument between two women on April 26, 2021 escalated into a physical confrontation after an altercation a few days earlier.

Redmond waived her bail last year.
