Saugeen Shores is ready to celebrate 25 years since the amalgamation that created it.
Mayor Luke Charbonneau says the whole weekend will be full of events, including downtown kickoff events in Port Elgin and Southampton on August 9. Charbonneau says there will be an exciting visitor, as the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Honourable Edith Dumont, will be coming on Saturday to help commemorate the occasion.
"At 10 a.m. we're gonna do the opening ceremonies and she's gonna participate with us in that event. We have a time capsule which has a lot of great stuff from the last 25 years in Saugeen Shores going into it and we're going to have the Lieutenant Governor there and she's going to do the ceremonial closing of the time capsule," Charbonneau shared.
Charbonneau notes that Port Elgin is also celebrating 150 years as a town. Saturday will get started with a free pancake breakfast at the Southampton Coliseum, with Mayor Charbonneau flipping and serving pancakes from 8:30-10 a.m. when the opening ceremonies will begin with the Lieutenant Governor.
"It's a tremendous honour to have her, and I hope lots of folks come out from the community to welcome her and to take part in what's gonna be a pretty great event. After that, there's a whole days worth of events up at Jubilee Park, the Southampton Rotary Club's having a family fun day up there, and then the free concert at night," Charbonneau said.
Charbonneau says he feels incredibly lucky and honoured to be mayor and to celebrate this milestone with the community.
"It's just a sense of how lucky we are to live in this place and how incredible a place it is, and how many great people we have, not only today but have always had here who have been visionary and have built bit-by-bit to build this great place. What I've come to understand is that the future is just as bright as the past has been," Charbonneau stated proudly.
