Police investigating anti-lockdown protest in Hanover

Organizers and protestors could be facing charges after an anti-lockdown protest in Hanover.

Around 4 p.m. on Saturday April 17, police said about 40 people gathered near Hanover Park on 7th Avenue. They were there protesting the latest COVID-related provincial stay-at-home order and other health unit guidelines.

According to police, the group remained peaceful as they marched with signs along 7th Avenue, then east on 10th Street to Heritage Square. The rally, which comprised of men and women of all ages, stayed at Heritage Square for about 15 minutes, before returning to Hanover Park and dispersing.

Hanover Police were on the scene monitoring the protest. They said the crowd generally followed social distancing protocols, however, no one was wearing masks.

The protest is under investigation, with police saying that charges are pending against the event organizers and others under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act.
