OSSTF opposes most of Ontario's education changes

The Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation is warning that the Ford government's change in classroom sizes will be a hot topic in the lead-up to contract talks this summer.

District 8 President Shane Restall said under the proposal to increase the number of students per class, one in four teaching jobs will be eliminated over the next four year.

"From my perspective as a federation leader, as a local leader, the projection is that one in four teaching jobs are going to be eliminated in four years. From a student, community and parent perspective, that means that classes are going to be eliminated, that student choice is going to be eliminated," he said.

Restall said another concern is the requirement that every student has to complete four E-learning credits.

"Once this is implemented, every student will be responsible for taking four E-learning credits. That will be funded at an even lower level than the 28 to 1 level.   We have a strong online learning community in Avon Maitland. We know that E-learning isn't for every student."
