The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation is strongly suggesting property owners at the top of the shoreline bluffs stop clear-cutting trees.
Coastal Resources Manager Geoff Peach says the clear-cutting is adding to the already-serious erosion problem.
Peach explains that tree roots hold the slope in place in many areas, but as the trees are cut and the roots die, the slope collapses.
He suggests selectively cutting only a few trees, or even just a few branches, to improve the view of the lake, but at the same time protecting the bluffs.
Peach adds leaving the trees creates a bit of protection for the cottage or home from off-shore wind storms which have become quite intense over the last few years.
