One of Grey County's long-term care homes needs millions of dollars in upgrades.
Rockwood Terrace in Durham was built in 1984 to standards set in 1972. It has 100 beds.
The county's Long-Term Care Director, Lynne Johnson, says it will cost about $11.5-million to bring it up to current standards.
"Residents now need a lot more physical care than they did when the home was built in the 80's and so the home has not been able to evolve to meet those needs," said Johnson in a presentation to Grey County Council.
Johnson says the upgrades could be funded through a variety of provincial programs and could be accomplished without adding to the tax bill.
Grey county will hire a consultant to determine how to proceed with plans for the upgrade. It will be up to county councillors to decide if the upgrades actually happen.
Some councillors aren't sure if Grey County should continue providing long term care facilities under the current model because it's so expensive. One option might be a some kind of public/private partnership.
It costs Grey County about $6-million a year to operate its three long-term care homes.
