A local golfer is proving that you're never too old to do something most people can only dream of.
On August 11, 92-year-old Verna Filby was enjoying a round of golf at the Links of Kent Golf Club when she teed off on a par 3 she'd played countless times.
This time was different, as she ended up hitting her first-ever hole in one.
Filby told Mike and Cheryl on BIG COUNTRY 91.3 FM's morning show The BIG Breakfast that she had no idea it had gone in.
"The greenskeeper was cutting the grass, and he pulled off and was pointing, and we thought, what was he doing, and then the marshal comes flying down and says, 'Your ball's in the hole, you got a hole in one,'" she laughed.
What Filby accomplished is something only one to two per cent of golfers experience every year. According to the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) of America, the odds of making a hole-in-one are 12,500 to 1.
Filby explained that the feat was extra special as it happened on her brother's 91st birthday. Once she finished the round, she made sure the first person she celebrated with was her sibling.
"I went to the seniors' home where my brother is, and we had a little drink," added Filby.
When asked what's the next golf feat she'd like to accomplish, Filby joked that she couldn't think of one, but might just try for another hole in one.
