The former Georges P. Vanier Catholic School in Chatham has finally been sold.
The St. Clair Catholic District School Board has approved the sale of the school at 20 Cecile Avenue in Chatham to Conseil scolaire Viamonde for $1.6 million.
The school board said the transaction is scheduled to close on Monday.
"This has been an important priority for our Board, and we are excited to close this chapter," said John Van Heck, School Board Chair.
The former Georges P. Vanier Catholic School is the school board's last remaining surplus property following the reorganization of Catholic education in Chatham.
“We are pleased to have reached an agreement that supports the responsible disposition of this property,” added Lisa Demers, Director of Education. “I applaud the Board for its continued commitment to ethical decision-making and the careful management of our resources.”
The Catholic restructuring resulted in the opening of two brand new schools, St. Angela Merici in 2020 and St. Teresa of Calcutta in 2024. It also saw the closing and sale of the former St. Ursula, Monsignor Uyen, St. Vincent, St. Agnes, and St. Joseph schools.
The former Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School was also refurbished and reopened as the new Monsignor Uyen in 2021.
