Chatham man looking to be on CK's next council

A Chatham realtor has put his name forward for Chatham-Kent's upcoming election.

Michael Gibbons is looking to be one of two Ward 7 councillors, representing people in North East Chatham. He previously ran in 2022 but didn't secure enough votes to be one of six Chatham councillors.

Gibbons told CK News Today he decided to run again over concerns with the number of people running out of anger, believing they can fix every issue.

"We need someone to come in that's just going to be there to listen, to understand, to guide, and try to keep things on the rails," he explained.

One thing Gibbons won't do is promise to fix an issue.

One topic he believes the next council will heavily discuss is housing and the homeless crisis. To him, there's no solution that will solve the issue outright.

"I'm in support of doing [something to help], but you have to understand that it's only going to be a partial solution," explained Gibbons.

When asked why people should vote for him, Gibbons mentioned his time on multiple local boards and how it taught him how to be a leader.

"I hope that I can show Chatham-Kent that I'm a leader, I'm a listener, and that I'm dedicated to keeping up with the work that's already happened to help Chatham-Kent grow," he added.

CK's election will be on October 26, 2026.
