CK beach accessibility expanded with another floating wheelchair

Another beach in Chatham-Kent (CK) is now more accessible thanks to a floating beach wheelchair, also called Mobi Chair, made available through various generous groups.

On Tuesday, The Children's Treatment Centre Foundation of Chatham-Kent announced its three-year Mobi Chair Project is now complete with the addition of a new floating beach wheelchair at Mitchell's Bay Beach. Erieau and Rondeau beaches already had Mobi Chairs.

The chairs give individuals with disabilities and limited mobility the opportunity to enjoy CK's beautiful beaches. Mobi Chairs are specially designed, amphibious wheelchairs with large floating tires that travel easily over sand and allow users to safely enter the water.

The specialized chairs were made possible through funding from the Chatham Kent Community Foundation and South Kent Wind Community Fund. A storage area for the Mitchell's Bay chair was paid for through the Councillor Ward Funding Program provided by Hydro One.

"We are incredibly grateful to the CK Community Foundation and the Municipality of Chatham-Kent for helping make this project possible," said Mike Genge, President and CEO of the Children's Treatment Centre Foundation of Chatham-Kent. "These Mobi Chairs help remove barriers so more children, adults, seniors, and families can experience the joy of spending time at the beach."

The free Mobi Chairs are available for public day use throughout the beach season on a first come, first served basis. Users can sign out a chair at the following locations:

• Erieau Beach: Sign out at Five-Eau (889 Mariners Road, Erieau)

• Rondeau Beach: Sign out at the Rondeau Yacht Club (Call ahead (519-674-3830)

• Mitchell's Bay Beach: Sign out at The Outpost Restaurant/Five Eau (7 Main Street, Mitchell’s Bay)
