London man charged after home invasion, firearm discharge, drug trafficking in Chatham

Chatham-Kent (CK) police have arrested and charged a London man following an alleged home invasion, firearm discharge, and drug trafficking at a home in Chatham.

Police allege a 25-year-old man from London produced a handgun, which discharged during a struggle while he was being restrained at a home on Taylor Avenue in Chatham on Saturday night.

Police alleged that two suspects entered the home and demanded property from the occupant before fleeing the scene. However, the incident escalated into a disturbance involving multiple individuals in the vicinity when a man discarded suspected drugs while attempting to leave the area.

"Concerned for public safety, the witness intervened and restrained the suspect until police arrived," said police. "A witness was able to gain control of the firearm and maintain custody of the suspect until officers arrived and took him into custody."

Police said no injuries were reported.

The London suspect faces numerous charges, including:

Robbery with a firearm

Disguise with intent

Possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking

Possession of methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking

Assault with a weapon

Discharging a firearm in a reckless manner

Unauthorized possession of a firearm

Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose

Careless carrying of a firearm

Obstructing a peace officer

Police said the accused remains in custody pending a bail hearing.

Police noted a search of a residence connected to the investigation also turned up drug trafficking paraphernalia, including digital scales, packaging materials and a debt list.

According to CK police, investigators also seized 43 grams of cocaine, 31.5 grams of methamphetamine, and a quantity of prescription medication with an estimated value of $6,000.

The investigation continues as police continue to review surveillance footage and other evidence to identify the other suspect involved in the home invasion.

The incident appears to be isolated, the occupant of the residence was not harmed, and there is no ongoing risk to public safety, said police.

CK police remind the public to be careful when witnessing criminal activity to avoid serious injury or death, adding that personal safety should always remain the priority.

"While we recognize and appreciate the desire of community members to assist, situations involving suspected offenders can escalate rapidly and unpredictably, particularly when weapons may be involved. Members of the public are encouraged to be good witnesses rather than placing themselves at risk," said police.

Police encourage the public to contact police immediately when they witness criminal activity, maintain a safe distance, and provide responding officers with as much information as possible, including descriptions of individuals, vehicles and direction of travel.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact CK police at (519) 352-1234 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
