CK announces new affordable housing unit in Wallaceburg

Thanks to over $6 million in funding from the provincial and federal governments, Chatham-Kent has announced a new affordable housing project in Wallaceburg.

Officials broke ground on the new 72-unit mixed-income building Tuesday morning.

"Every new affordable home represents an opportunity for someone to build a better future," said CK Mayor Darrin Canniff. "As CK continues to grow, increasing our supply of affordable housing is one of our highest priorities."

The building is made possible through $5.2 million from the Ontario Priorities Housing Initiative and roughly $1.6 million from the Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative. To complete the build, CK is using a combination of its Affordable Housing Fund and a $13 million debenture.

"Together with our federal and municipal partners, we are delivering Wallaceburg's first new community housing project in decades. This investment will help create new homes, support local priorities, and ensure more families have access to safe, affordable housing," said Parliamentary Assistant to Ontario's Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Matthew Rae.

The apartment building will be located at 199 Westcourt Boulevard, and construction is expected to take roughly two years.
