Windsor police say one person has been charged and two others are on the run after an unusual theft in the downtown core.
On Tuesday, officers were called to a house on University Avenue East near Marentette Avenue. They were told that three masked people had hopped a fence the night before and entered an exotic bird coop on the property.
Thirty exotic birds, worth a total of $30,000, were stolen. One bird was killed during the incident.
Members of the Target Base Unit quickly identified one of the suspects. Working with Chatham-Kent police, the 29-year-old man was found in Chatham and arrested.
Police recovered 22 of the stolen birds, with the rest outstanding.
The man is charged with break-and-enter to commit theft over $5,000, willfully harming an animal, possession of stolen property over $5,000, and wearing a disguise to commit an offence.
A warrant has been issued for 19-year-old Mahmoud Moe Khalaf. He is described as Middle Eastern, about 5' 5", with a slender build, brown eyes, and short brown hair.
A third unnamed suspect is described as male with tanned skin. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a green face mask, a grey hoodie, black shorts, and black Nike shoes. The suspect may go by the name "Darwish.”
