OPP and CK Fire responded to 2 vehicle fires on the 401

Two vehicles went up in flames on Highway 401 in Chatham-Kent (CK) over the weekend.

The first fire took place at around 8:30 p.m. on Friday.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and CK Fire responded to Hwy. 401 for a heavy tow truck that was on fire in the eastbound lanes.

According to OPP, the lanes were closed for about 20 minutes while fire crews extinguished the blaze.

No injuries were reported, and no charges have been laid.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but OPP Provincial Constable Jeff Beaumaster noted it was likely a mechanical fire.

The fire led to a fuel leak, which has since been cleaned up by the Ministry of Environment.

The second fire took place on Saturday at around 8:40 a.m., when a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) caught fire after it collided with a deer.

OPP and CK Fire responded to the incident on the 401 near Heatherington Road, closing one eastbound lane for a short period of time.

Officials report that no one was injured.

OPP have reminded drivers that looking further down the highway will open your field of vision and allow you to respond quicker when wild animals cross the road.
