Anyone looking for a free, fun, culturally enriching event to take part in over the long weekend should head to the Walpole Island Sports Complex Fairgrounds.
Walpole Island First Nation will host its 32nd annual Spring Pow Wow in Bkejwanong Territory on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17.
Rain or shine, the gathering will start with a grand entrance and Grass Dance ceremony at noon both days. There will also be a second ceremonial dance at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
At 4 p.m. on Saturday, a Memorial Dance will be held to reflect on the life and legacy of the late Jaynes "Press" Altiman ba (Waabi Maa'iingan Manidoo Nini). Press ba was a knowledge keeper and spring pow-wow committee member. He helped build the Bkejwanong Lodge at Highbanks and built and gave the Eagle Staff to Walpole Island First Nation in 2009. Anyone who has a picture of him is encouraged to bring it and carry it during the ceremony.
Other highlights include Buck's Dancing Out, the Youth Bustle Special, and Hand Drum and Owl Dance on Saturday. Sunday will see the Baby Pageant, BYC Dance Special, and Smoke Dance.
The weekend will be a celebration full of dance, drums, song, and food.
Everyone is welcome to attend, though there is limited seating, so people are encouraged to bring their own camp chairs.
