Patrons in Chatham-Kent wanting to bring their own alcohol to outdoor events will not be permitted, at least for now.
The municipality is reminding the public that it currently does not allow members of the public to bring their own alcohol to outdoor public events and won't in the future based on feedback from several groups.
The municipality said it gathered feedback from local event organizers, municipal departments, emergency services, public health officials, and municipalities across Ontario about the new provincial Bring-Your-Own alcohol regulations and says the majority don't support it.
Many of the concerns cited include safety, liability, increased insurance and security costs, and the loss of fundraising revenue from licensed bar sales.
“Chatham-Kent is committed to supporting safe and successful community events,” said Kelly Bauchus, Chatham-Kent’s Supervisor of Special Events. “Based on the feedback received through our consultations, Administration is not moving forward with Bring-Your-Own alcohol permits at this time.”
Alcohol service at events in Chatham-Kent will continue to operate under the existing Municipal Alcohol Policy and Special Event permitting process.
As of April 30, 2026, Ontario allows adults 19-years of age and older to bring their own beer, wine, or spirits to designated, municipally approved outdoor community and cultural events.
Organizers must get a special occasion permit from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario and comply with local municipal bylaws, which may include events like farmers markets, festivals, and concerts.
The province previously said this initiative is designed to increase local tourism and boost economic activity.
