CK council set to vote on 'Waste to Energy Project'

The future of a potential project that will divert waste from landfills and convert it to energy will be decided at Chatham-Kent's council's next meeting.

Councillors will vote on Monday on whether to move the plan forward, right before an April 30 deadline.

This will be the ninth time that council has discussed the project over the last three years.

If approved, construction would start next spring.

Mayor Darrin Canniff, along with multiple CK councillors, held a news conference on Tuesday, outlining the plan and its benefits one final time.

If the thumbs up is given, the municipality's investments towards the project will be $16 million. The remaining $160 million price tag will be covered by the federal and provincial governments, and Greenfield Global, the company overseeing the project.

Canniff said the plant will be similar to one of Greenfield's most successful locations in Quebec.

"That design, they're copy pasting and putting it here," he said.

He continued discussing Greenfield, saying he believes the company had sufficient time to make the necessary adjustments to support a local facility.

"They had six years to improve on that. They went through and said, 'What can we do differently?' They know it's working there. They're ready to invest in another one here," Canniff explained.

By making that $16 million contribution, Chatham-Kent would save $9 million in expenses it would otherwise pay to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC).

Conservative estimates suggest that over the next 30 years, the municipality could also receive around $123 million in dividends from the project.

Those funds would be used to offset potential tax increases or wastewater service charges.
